Bladel is nowadays a lively village in the heart of the Brabant Kempen. But those who look beyond the bustling market square and modern shops will discover a rich history that dates back to the early Middle Ages. A story of farmers and forests, of fear and superstition, of wars and reconstruction – and of a notorious robber witch who forever linked her name to the region.

Early history: reclamation and agriculture

The Kempen was originally an extensive heath and forest area, not very fertile and sparsely populated. The first permanent settlement in the Bladel region dates back to the early Middle Ages, when farmers began to reclaim the desolate lands for agriculture.

The name Bladel first appeared in historical documents from the thirteenth century. The village slowly developed around a church and a communal use of the surrounding lands – a typical pattern for villages in the Kempen.

The sixteenth century: poverty, war and... Zwarte Kaat

The sixteenth century was a turbulent time for the Kempen. The Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) also hit this area hard. Troops moved through the region, plundered villages, and left poverty in their wake.

In this turbulent period – around 1596 – a notorious gang of robbers operated in the Kempen. At its head was a woman who went down in history as Zwarte Kaat, also known as the witch of Hellenende. Her gang committed robberies, lootings, and kidnappings in the region, spreading fear among the local population.

Whether Zwarte Kaat was really a witch, or merely a dangerous criminal who was labeled "witch" in a superstitious era – history leaves that open. What is certain is that her name lived on for centuries in the folklore of the Kempen.

The nineteenth and twentieth centuries: growth and modernization

After the turbulence of the early modern era, Bladel gradually grew into a stable agricultural village. The nineteenth century slowly but surely brought modernization: better roads, education, and later electricity.

In the twentieth century, Bladel underwent a true transformation. The development of infrastructure, the growth of the manufacturing industry in the region, and later the service sector led to an economic boom that significantly changed the village. At the same time, the Brabant culture – with its emphasis on community, conviviality, and traditions – remained firmly embedded in daily life.

Bladel today: proud of its past

Bladel is today a village that cherishes its past. Local history is visible in the architecture, in the stories passed down from generation to generation, and in initiatives that keep the rich culture of the Kempen alive.

One of these initiatives is Heksenjacht Bladel (Witch Hunt Bladel): an interactive GPS scavenger hunt that brings the legend of Zwarte Kaat back to life. Playing through the village, discovering historical locations, and getting closer to the mystery of 1596 – in a way that makes history tangible.
