Six weeks of summer holidays sounds wonderful, until the kids start yelling "I'm bored" after three days. Fortunately, you're in a good spot in the Brabant Kempen: forests, heathlands, water, and charming villages are just around the corner, and you usually don't have to drive far to get there. We've listed the best summer activities with children, so your holiday will fill up naturally.
Start with an adventure
Do you want to kick off the holiday right away? Go on Witch Hunt Bladel, an interactive outdoor GPS scavenger hunt through the Kempen. Using a free app, you and your team will hunt for Zwarte Kaat, solve riddles, and discover places most people never see. Everyone participates, you play whenever it suits you, and one ticket is valid for an entire team of up to four people. Ideal for a long summer day when you already want to be outdoors.
Cool off by the water
On warm days, water is worth its weight in gold. The Kempen has several recreational lakes and swimming paradises where children can entertain themselves for hours, from a refreshing swim to building sandcastles on the shore. Various holiday parks in the area have a lake or swimming pool that is also accessible to day visitors. Bring a towel, some sunscreen, and an ice cream, and the afternoon is made.
Go out cycling
Summer is the season to grab your bike. The cycling junction network in the Kempen is extensive and largely car-free, so you can easily create a tailor-made route along pine forests and open fields. Plan a playground or a terrace along the way, and you'll have a complete day out. You can find more inspiration in our guide with the most beautiful cycling routes through the Kempen.
Into nature
Nothing is as free and as fun as playing in the woods. Look for critters, build a den from branches, or give the children binoculars to spot butterflies and birds. On long summer evenings, you can even turn it into a short evening walk, with a flashlight for the brave ones.
It's also okay to be lazy
A successful holiday doesn't have to be packed. An ice cream in the market square, a terrace in the shade, and a stroll through one of the villages of the Acht Zaligheden is just enough for a quiet day. Recharging is also part of it, for you as well as for the children.
A day further afield
Do you feel like going big? Well-known animal parks and theme parks are within driving and cycling distance for a full day of adventure. Count on a full day and don't combine it with too many other plans.
